Women’s T20 challenge: Trailblazers win over Supernovas
Skipper Smriti Mandhana’s terrific 90 runs in 67 balls led the Trailblazers get the better of Supernovas by two runs in the second edition of the opening game of Women’s T20 Challenge on Monday at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. With her swashbuckling performance Mandhana bagged the Man of the Match title.
Yesterday’s victory was not an easy earning as Harmanpreet Kaur gave them a mighty scare. She thrashed Jhulan Goswami for four fours in five balls.
The Supernovas won the toss and decided to field first. This proved to be a wise decision with off-spinner Anuja Patil knocking off New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates in the second over itself. The Supernovas gave Mandhana and Harleen Deol on the hooks for the next few overs giving them only 25 runs in the first eight overs.
The Trailblazers added 94 runs between overs eight to 18 largely down to their captain’s blazing knock. However, the Supernovas’ innings too started on a rocky note with birthday girl Sophie Ecclestone striking in her very first over.
Wicket-keeper R Kalpana too did well to hold onto the chance in the third attempt. Sometime later, Deepti Sharma failed a simple catch at mid-on given by Jemimah Rodrigues and Athapaththu too got lucky twice. Harmanpreet finished unbeaten on an excellent 46 runs for 34 balls.
Trailblazers, Supernovas and Velocity will play each other in the round robin.
