Truecaller bug sends text message to users linking UPI to bank accounts
Android phone users with Caller ID app Truecaller who updated the app were shocked when they received a text message stating their registration of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) app was functional and their bank accounts were linked to ICICI Bank’s portal for UPI transactions. The users received the SMS from ICICI Bank from late Monday evening till early Tuesday morning. the app is used by over 100 million active users in India.
It may be noted that the Caller ID app is a user generated content app that stores registration details of telephone numbers in its database and also has a feature named Truecaller Pay that offers UPI-based transactions. The users received the message when the app was updated and the users reported the matter to the latest Truecaller version 10.41.6, said a report.
On receiving the complaints- especially on social media, Truecaller swung into action and terminated the update and rectified the application. it later released an apology statement saaying it had discovered a bug in the latest update of Truecaller that affected the payment feature and automatically triggered a registration after updating the version.
Also, the Managing director and CEO of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) Dilip Asbe confirmed that Truecaller’s bug started the onboarding process but registration cannot be completed without the two-step process that requires an OTP and bank details. he also added that the bug had been fixed.
