Stray dogs kill a dozen blackbucks in Gujarat

Stray dogs in Gujarat’s Velavadar National Park killed at least 12 blackbucks when the region suffered heavy rainfall and flooding in the last three days. Officials are expecting more blackbuck carcasses to emerge once the flood water recedes.

It may be noted that blackbucks are found in 39 villages including Ganeshgadh, Gokulpara, Sanes, Savainagar and Devalia, outside the national park towards Bhavnagar and nearly 4,000 of them are moving in revenue area. The assistant conservator of forest, MH Trivedi said, “In all 22 blackbucks were injured by dogs of whom 12 died and others are being given treatment.”

He added, “Villagers and NDRF are here to help us and constantly looking out for distress signals. We have created platforms so that the animals can climb up and save themselves as the water levels rise.”
The blackbucks, protected under the Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, are moved from the affected low-lying areas to higher level areas towards the villages and were killed in separate incidents.
