Serena William loses to China’s Wang; crashes out of Australian Opens
Seven-time Australian Open Champ and 23 times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams got knocked out of third-round in the Austrian Open losing a three-set classic to Chinese veteran and 27th seed Qiang Wang on Friday. Her ouster has shocked the sports lover. The event was held at Melbourne Park.
Wang was ferocious from the start registering a 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5 wins over the champ in about 2-hours and 41-minutes on the court. Friday’s win turned out to be Wang’s biggest win of her entire career. Later, she admitted that she needed to calm herself when she blew her chance to wrap up the match in the second set and she served for the victory at 5-4.
The tennis champ, Williams, on the other hand, lost the first set and in the second faced 3-5 deficit - a game away from exiting the tournament. Tension rose when the final set edged to 3-3 and neither play was able to pull away. Williams stumbled and gave Wang two match points while serving at 5-6. She saved the first then forced the game to deduce when Wang clunked a simple groundstroke into the net.
Those who follow the sport will remember that Williams destroyed Wang – 6-1, 6-0 in the US Open quarterfinals last year, but has not won a major title since 2017 when she won the Australian Open over her older sister Venus.
