Rahul Gandhi meets Sharad Pawar to discuss party political scenario
In a politically significant move, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar at the latter’s residence spending over an hour discussing present political scenario.
Though details of the meet were not known sources reveal that the NCP leader advised Gandhi to continue as party chief and not get disheartened with the Lok Sabha polls defeat.
Speaking to media, Pawar said, “Rahul had come to my residence and there was discussion on the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections and the upcoming assembly polls in Maharashtra. We did not discuss on NCP’s merger with Congress as was also being speculated.”
NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik also turned down any such news. He said, “There is an attempt to confuse NCP and Congress activists. I am sure our (NCP’s) activists will not succumb to such rumours.”
It may be noted that Pawar had met the Chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Raj Thackeray in Mumbai amidst talks that the latter could be a front-runner of the BJP-Sena alliance in October’s state Assembly elections.
Pawar was a Congress person before he split and formed the NCP in 1999. The NCP is part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA).
