Rafael Nadal brings glory to Spain, seals Davis Cup for sixth time
Ace tennis player Rafael Nadal for the sixth time sealed the Davis Cup for Spain after beating Canada 2-0 to win the inaugural edition of the new-look Davis Cup at the Caja Magica multi-purpose stadium in Madrid, Spain on Sunday.
The 33-year-old won all 8 matches he participated in and was honoured with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for his performance. The nearly 10-month sport commenced on February 1 had 18 participating nations divided into six round-robin groups of three teams each, with the winners of the groups.
Nadal beat the 20-year-old Denis Shapovalov 6-3 7-6 (9/7) to rack up his 8th victory in eight matches during a gruelling week. He saved a set point in the second-set tie-break before claiming his 28th successive Davis Cup singles win.
After the win, Nadal said, “I am incredibly happy to end the year like this.”
In 2018 the winning champ was Croatia.
