Private contractor behind SAIL chairman’s attack; 6 others arrested
Almost a month after SAIL chairman Anil Kumar Chaudhary was seriously injured by unidentified men, Delhi police have arrested a private contractor Ashok Kumar Singh in connection with the matter. Six other accused too have been arrested in the case.
DCP (Crime Branch) Dr. Ram Gopal Naik on Monday said that the 62-year-old Singh was arrested on Friday from his Vasant Kunj residence and was in police custody for three days. He was produced before a court on Monday. Others who have been arrested include Omprakash, Pravesh, Lalit, Amarjeet, a property dealer Sunil Balhara and his brother-in-law Satendra Kadyan.
Police informed that SAIL and the accused Singh’s company Sonam Trading SCZ signed Rs 100 crore coal deal and Singh’s company had already paid Rs 30 crore for the same. The coal samples brought twice by Chaudhary did not match the required standards and the deal was cancelled. An irked Singh hired people to attack Chaudhary.
The 58-year-old chairman was attacked by four people with iron rods while he was on his way back home. His car was hit by another vehicle at around 10.30 pm on August Kranti road and Chaudhary and his driver were rescued by Highway Patrolling Staff of Defence Colony which happened to reach the spot. Chaudhary sustained serious injuries on head, neck, knees and legs.
