Nation remembers Indira Gandhi on her 102nd birth anniversary
Interim Congress President Sonia along with Congress party people visited Shakti Sthal – the resting place of former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi marking her 102nd birth anniversary. Former President Pranab Mukherjee was also present at the venue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid his respect by tweeting, “Tributes to our former PM Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary.”
The Congress, from its official handle, tweeted, “On her birth anniversary, we pay homage to India's first female Prime Minister, the Late Smt Indira Gandhi. Her will and determination led our country to great heights. Her contributions to India's national security, economy & foreign policy will always be cherished.”
Indira Gandhi served as the first and only Prime Minister of India between 1966 and 1977 and later between 1980 and 1984 before she was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards and Khalistan supporters. She was the second-longest serving PM after her father and former PM late Jawaharlal Nehru. She also abolished privy purses of the erstwhile princely states, Operation Bluestar and was known for her revolutionary economic social reforms, hence, earning the name of Iron Lady of India.
