Nation marks 75th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi
Nation on Tuesday paid tributes to the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary which is also commemorated a Sadbhavana Diwas. Congress leaders including its interim president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra with husband Robert Vadra and daughter Miraya, former President Pranab Mukherjee, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others visited Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial ‘Veer Bhoomi’ in New Delhi.
The Congress is celebrating the anniversary with a series of week-long events along with prayer meetings and social programmes like blood donation camps, sapling plantation, seminars and conferences.
On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted a 55-second video crediting the late PM for sowing the seeds of revolution in the IT sector in India. He wrote, “This week we will celebrate my father, Rajiv Gandhi Ji’s 75th birth anniversary with memorial events across India. To honour him, each day this week, I will draw attention to one of his many incredible achievements. Today, the Information Technology revolution.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying homage to the late PM tweeted early in the morning, “Tributes to our former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also tweeted, “I offer my tributes to former Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his 75th birth anniversary today.”
Late PM was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election campaign rally in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur in 1991.
