Major blow to Cong as 10 Goa MLAs join BJP
Congress suffered yet another jolt on Wednesday when 10 out of 15 Goa MLAs merged with BJP upping its strength to 27 in the state and leaving Congress with only five. The party had emerged as the single largest party in 2017 in the 40 member assembly.
The Goa MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, met speaker Rajesh Patnekar on Wednesday evening and informed him about parting ways from the Congress. They demanded a separate sitting in the Monsoon Season of Goa assembly which begins on July 15.
Later, CM Pramod Sawant too met the speaker after reaching the assembly. Sawant also met the MLAs welcoming them into the party.
The MLAs who split include, Babu Kavaleka, Babush Monserratte, Jennifer Monserratte, Tony Fernandes, Francis Silveira, Filipe neri Rodrigues, Clafasio, Wilfred De Sa, Nilkant Halankar and Isidore Fernandes.
Four former Ministers, Pratapsingh Rane, Digambar Kamat, Ravi Naik and Luizinho Faleiro and MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco have remained loyal to Congress. Goa crisis has emerged as the Congress gasps for survival in Karnataka.
