Kolkata Left-wing students raise ‘Bharat Mata Se Azaadi’ slogans
Left-wing students of Kolkata raised slogans like ‘Bharat Mata Se Azaadi’, ‘Kashmir Maange Azaadi’, and ‘Assam Maange Azaadi’ at the Kolkata Literary Meet outside Victoria Memorial on Wednesday evening. The protesting activists were removed from the venue by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) even as a few dozen protesters demonstrated outside the venue. The session, however, went uninterrupted.
The Revolutionary Students’ Front (RSF) students from various universities, including Jadavpur University, were protesting against BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Swapan Dasgupta who is the author of the book Awakening Bharat Mata - The Political Beliefs of the Indian Right.
The book was recently released and Dasgupta was present at the meet to take part in a discussion on Indian culture and nationalism along with Visva Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty.
The protesters also carried long banners and posters that read ‘Hindurashtra is Rapist’ and tried entering the memorial premises from the East Gate, but were prevented by the cops. The students demonstrated for two hours outside the premises.
Later the cops escorted the BJP lawmaker through South gate following which the demonstrators also left around 9 pm.
Around two weeks back Dasgupta and Chakraborty were locked at the university campus in Birbhum district for their views in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens.
