India reports over 5,600 fresh cases; Maharashtra has nearly 50% of country’s fatalities
In an alarming development, India reported its highest daily-spike with about 5,611 Coronavirus positive cases in the last 24-hours taking the toll to 1,06,750 on Wednesday.
The number of fatalities too is on a rise with 140 deaths being recorded in the past one day taking the total count to 3,303. However the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has said that the country’s death rate – which is 0.2 deaths per lakh population - is very low compared to the 4.1 deaths per lakh population of the world.Following the past day’s trends, Tamil Nadu reported the second-highest number of new infections with 536 fresh cases taking the tally to 11,760 while Gujarat reported 366 new cases with a total count of 11,745 positive cases.
Out of the total cases reported from across the country, Maharashtra remains to be gravely stricken by the virus with around 37, 136 positive cases. Out of these, 22,746 are from Mumbai alone.
On Wednesday, the state also reported over 2,127 fresh cases, which is over the 2,000 mark for the fourth day in a row. On the other hand, Mumbai reported 1,411 cases in the last 24 hours.
The state also continues to account for nearly half of Novel Coronavirus-related deaths in the country with 1,325 fatalities, out of which over 800 are from Mumbai.
