Himachal, Assam report spike in Coronavirus cases after migrants return
While Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat continue to be major contributors of Novel Coronavirus, new states like Himachal Pradesh and Assam are signaling resurgence. About 12 persons tested positive on Friday and 45 on Thursday, taking Himachal Pradesh’s tally to 166. Till May 18, the state had only 81 positive cases. On the other hand, Assam’s tally has risen to 259 after 144 new patients emerged since May 19. Most of these fresh cases belong to migrants who have recently returned to their respective homes. As of Saturday, India has 1,25,101 confirmed cases with 3,720 fatalities.
Despite the spike in cases from different parts of the country, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has asserted that there has been a remarkable improvement with regards to doubling rate, which now stands at 13.3 days in contrast to 3.4 days, the death rate has dropped from 3.13 to 3.01%. However, the growth rate which was 3.16% on May 1 has now increased to 6.14%.
It said that the lockdown played a vital role in controlling the spread of the pandemic. It said that the absence of lockdown would have led to over 36 lakh to 70 lakh Coronavirus positive cases in the country with a high mortality rate of 2.1 lakh and more by now.
