German State Finance Minister commits suicide over Covid-19 outbreak crisis
Coronavirus outbreak has left the world’s economy shaken. As of now, more than 7 lakh cases were reported with over 34000 deaths worldwide. Worried over the same, the Finance Minister of Germany’s Hesse state, Thomas Schaefer (54) has committed suicide. His body was found near a railway track on Sunday.
State Premier Volker Bouffier said that he was deeply worried over the economic fallout due to the Coronavirus spread and apparently committed suicide due to stress over how to cope with the economic crisis.
We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad," Bouffier said in a statement. He recalled how Thomas, who was the State Finance Minister for 10 years, had been working day and night to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.
"Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried," said Bouffier. "It's precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him," he added.
Notably, Germany is poorly hit by the major spread of Covid-19. The number of confirmed positive cases has crossed the 57000 mark till Monday, while 455 deaths have been reported so far. The southern state of Bavaria is worst hit with the highest confirmed cases of 13989.
