Gas leak in Andhra’s Kurnool-based agro factory claims one life
General Manager of SPY Agro Industries Limited Srinivas Rao lost his life while two others were reported to be serious after ammonia gas leak occurred in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Saturday morning.
Preliminary reports stated that the incident occurred at the same spot in a pipeline which was reportedly repaired on Friday. People started panicking when the pungent smell started emanating and the five persons – including Rao – came in direct contact with it. While the gas leak turned fatal for Rao, the four others rushed out of the area and fainted. They were admitted to the local hospital and are reported to be safe.
Kurnool District Collector G Veerapandian confirming the report said, “We have taken up all safety measures to contain the leakage of the gas. Apart from fire tenders, officials from the revenue, police, industries, and medical and health departments were pressed into service to take up relief operations on a war footing.”
He added, “The leakage of the gas was confined to the factory premises and it has not spread outside. So, there is no need for the people of the town to get panicky.”
He added that the fire service personnel were trying to plug the gas leak and there is no danger to the lives of those living in areas around the plant. He also appealed to the people not to panic and remain indoors due to the pandemic.
The plant is owned by Former Member of Parliament SPY Reddy.
