Children of elderly parents could be punished if they did not take care of them

Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal seeking provisions to punish ‘sons and daughters’ for not taking care of their elderly parents and could even face jail term on grounds of abandonment.

The proposal was mooted by Bihar’s social welfare department. The proposal said the complaints of the parents will be registered under non-bailable section, said a report.
The decision could have a far-reaching impact on society in taking care of the elderly, who are at times neglected or abandoned by their wards.

The cabinet also discussed 16 other agendas and also decided to give government jobs to dependents of martyrs of the Pulwama and Kupwara terrorist attacks residing in the state.

Ratan Kumar Thakur from Bhagalpur district, Sanjay Kumar Sinha from Patna and Pintu Kumar Singh from Begusarai were martyred in the two incidents respectively in Jammu and Kashmir and their dependents will be provided with a job in Class III and Class IV category as per their qualification.
