Big Bout Boxing Indian League starts today; all eyes at Mary Kom
The Big Bout – Indian Boxing League starting today will have some exciting moments comprising six franchises in the inaugural season and will be played in New Delhi, Ludhiana and Cuttack. Today’s inaugural session will have only flyweight category (51kg) and lightweight (60 kg) categories for women boxers. The league will conclude on December 21.
On an inaugural day, as per the decision of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), Mary Kom and Zareen will face off each other in a warm-up match before the big fight and the winner of this trial will represent India in the 51kg category for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Qualifiers scheduled from 3-14 February 2020 in Wuhan.
In all, 18 matches will be played in the Round Robin format during the league. Each match will have 3 rounds of 90-minute each and the league is scheduled to be played between six teams having five men and two women boxers divided in each.
Celebrated champ Mary Kom (51kg) will represent Punjab Panthers while her rival Nikhat Zareen (51kg) will play for Odisha Warriors. Two other boxing champs Pinki Rani will represent Bengaluru and Rio Olympic bronze medallist Ingrid Valencia will play for Bombay Bullets. The other prolific Indian pugilists include Asian Champion Amit Panghal, Shiva Thapa and veteran L Sarita Devi fight alongside foreign boxers.
The men’s weight category will be flyweight of (52kg), bantamweight (57kg), welterweight (69kg), middleweight (75kg) and heavyweight (91kg).
