As fresh cases pour in, Covid-19 crosses 5K mark, Centre contemplates extending lockdown
The sudden surge in Covid-19 infected persons in India crossed the 5000 mark by Wednesday morning. About 568 fresh cases were reported in less than 24 hours and 25 confirmed deaths including a 1.5-year-old from Gujarat’s Jamnagar. The latest number that is constantly changing- across the country stood at 5,325 including a 23-day-old newborn from Telangana. The disease has claimed about 165 lives till now.
The Coronavirus cases that surfaced recently had connections with the Tablighi Jamaat in New Delhi’s Nizamuddin. Since then fresh cases are being reported from different states with every passing hour. Sources reveal that the Centre is worried as the disease – which was till now restricted to a certain section of the society – has started to spread among the general class. The number of cases in Mumbai’s sprawling slum Dharavi has gone up to 9 with two more testing positive at Mukund slum and Dhanwada locality. Also, about 200 people from Greater Noida slums have been sent to quarantine centre and are under observation.
Owing to the increase in cases – especially in Maharashtra (approx 1018 total cases), Delhi (about 642 cases) Telangana (approx 404), Andhra Pradesh (about 314), Punjab (96) and Madhya Pradesh (about 173) - the centre is mulling over extending the 21-day nation-wide lockdown by two more weeks as several state governments have also requested it. However, the government is expected to announce its decision once the 21-day deadline nears.
