Amitabh Bachchan selected for prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award
Bollywood’s megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award – the highest Indian film award. The announcement was made by Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday on Twitter.
The minister while making the announcement, wrote, “The legend Amitabh Bachchan, who entertained and inspired for two generations, has been selected unanimously for Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The entire country and the international community is happy. My heartiest congratulations to him."
Following his tweet, the microblogging website rained congratulatory messages for the veteran actor. Filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Anil Kapoor were the first to congratulate him on Twitter. Others who also wished the senior actor included legendary playback singer and the award jury member Asha Bhosle, senior actor Rajnikant, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and even Abhishek Bachchan.
Asha Bhosle tweeted, “As a Dadasaheb Phalke Award Jury Member, I am pleased to congratulate Shri. Amitabh Bachchanji on his getting this Prestigious Award.”
Karan Johar in his congratulatory message said, “The most inspiring legend of Indian cinema! He is a bonafide rockstar! I am honoured and proud to be in the era of Amitabh Bachchan. The prestigious #DadaSahebPhalkeAward to @SrBachchan!”
Till now there have been 49 recipients of the award so far including Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Pran, Yash Chopra, Gulzar, Shyam Benegal among others. Only two personalities have been awarded the honour posthumously: Yash Chopra and Vinod Khanna.
The annual award is presented at the National Film Award ceremony and given for 'outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema’. The 76-year-old actor has been making a substantial contribution in the world of cinema for the past five decades. The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹1,000,000.
