Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos pledges to donate $10 bn to fight climate conditions
World’s richest man and e-commerce magnate Jeff Bezos on Monday announced the launch of Bezos Earth Fund, in an initiative to fight depleting climate conditions. The tycoon has also pledged to spend 8% of his fortune to the fund, which would start issuing grants this summer.
In a recent post on his official networking website, Bezos wrote, “Today, I’m thrilled to announce I am launching the Bezos Earth Fund. Climate Change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share.”
The post further read, “This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs—any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world.”
It may be recollected that last year the tycoon had said that he would look to reduce the carbon footprint of his company after reports were published that Amazon oozed over 44.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2018.
Bezos has often been criticised for not signing the Giving Pledge – a trend under which the rich and powerful give away their wealth during their lifetimes to special causes.
