Ace designer Wendell Rodricks passes away following a heart attack
Famous fashion designer and Padma Shri recipient Wendell Rodricks passed away at 59 due to a heart attack when he was sleeping at his Colvale residence in Goa on Wednesday evening. He was instrumental in reviving the Kunbi tribe sari in Goa and raised his voice for social causes, environmental issues, and gay rights.
Rodricks had been ailing for some time and his condition had weakened lately, but he decided against moving to the hospital. As soon as the news of his death spread, condolences from the fashion fraternity, Bollywood and other sections of the society started pouring in.
Fashion Design Council of India Chairman Sunil Sethi said on the sidelines of the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai, “The entire fashion industry is shocked. People did notice a little change in his health, but nobody realized it will lead to this. It’s too sudden. He was a legend.”
Filmmaker Onir Tweeted, “Absolutely shocked and heartbroken to hear about my friend @Wendellrodricks sudden demise. Sad that this happens when he was about to open his dream project...the museum of costumes in Goa. Loving and warm...will always cherish the week I spend with him this nov in Goa.”
Rodricks is also credited for pioneering the concept of ‘resort wear’ way back when it was not a popular trend in India. Rodricks was instrumental in planning the first-ever Lakme India Fashion Week (LFW) in 2000 and guiding it in its formative years.
He was also the recipient of French honour Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2015. Rodricks is survived with his life partner Jerome Marrel. The funeral will be held on Thursday at 4 pm.
