59 arrested in Bengaluru’s Padarayanapura for attacking frontline workers

Bengaluru police arrested 59 people, including a female drug peddler, on Monday for assaulting police officials, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and ASHA workers on Sunday night when they tried to take samples of 58 Coronavirus suspects. About four policemen sustained severe injuries.

The incident occurred at Padarayanapura when the team was carrying out tests in a tent put up in the area. A senior officer said that the prime accused, Farooza (26) spread rumours that the police would take all to the hospital on the pretext of quarantine. Soon, a crowd carrying long knives, wooden logs and other lethal weapons started walking towards them. They broke the lights, uprooted the tent and attacked the frontline workers.

Additional Commissioner (West Zone) Soumendu Mukherjee said that four attackers have been taken into police custody for further probe, while others are in judicial custody. The mobile phones of the accused have been seized and 8-10 special police teams are examining the attack footage.

He said, “Most of the accused have a criminal background and since they assaulted four of our personnel, we have registered an attempt to murder case against them.”

Following the incident, about 800 police personnel have been deployed in the area with about 15 of them in every street.
