31 die, over 100 injured at Shia shrine in Karbala as pathway collapses
At least 31 people were killed and 100 others injured on Tuesday after a walkway collapsed at the shrine resulting into a mass stampede in the Iraqi city of Karbala on the holy day of Ashura. The incident took place towards the end of the procession when the pilgrims run approximately 2 kilometers from Qantar al-Salam in Karbala toward the grave of Prophet Mohammed’s grandson Imam Hussein.
Ministry spokesman Saif al Badr said the death toll could rise as 10 of the wounded were in critical condition adding it is Iraq’s deadliest stampede in recent history.
It may be noted that thousands of Shiite pilgrims from across the globe are presently in Karbala to commemorate the killing of Imam Hussein.
The wounded were taken to Al-Hussein Medical City outside Karbala. Authorities at Imam Hussein Shrine said that the nationalities of the victim who died are yet to be confirmed.
President Barham Salih and health minister Alaa al-Din Alwan and reached the spot on Tuesday evening and expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims.
