3 arrested for posing as CBI officials and blackmailing businesswoman
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Tuesday, arrested three people for allegedly posing as CBI officials and threatening and extorting money from a businesswoman based in Mumbai. While two were nabbed from Mumbai, a hacker was arrested from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused had been sending her e-mail from a fake e-mail address which looked very much like the authenticate address. The complainant alleged that the so-called officials had been threatening her of making a negative report in an enquiry being conducted against her by another law enforcement agency.
The arrested persons said that one of the accused Viresh Pathak, who is yet to be arrested, posed as Special Investigation Officer, Senior Superintendent of Police of CBI with Anti-Corruption Branch, Delhi. Viresh had been sending her emails asking her to produce details about her company and her business dealings. Another person, by the name Abhishek Jha, posed to be Viresh’s assistant. Soon the complainant was asked to pay Rs 10 lakh and they finally settled for Rs 5 lakh.
A case has been registered against Abhishek Jha and Viresh Pathak under section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 384 (extortion) 490 (Breach of contract), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery) and 471 (forged documents) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating by impersonation online) of Information and Technology Act.
