As many as 25 Indian students trapped in China’s coronavirus infected city Wuhan were expected to reach Kolkata from Kunming airport by Friday morning. However, no update on their arrival has been reported till the filing of this report. The students are interns with a hospital in Yichang, which is about 300 km away from Wuhan. About 20 students are from Kerala itself.
The Indian embassy in Beijing through a statement said that they were closely monitoring the evolving situation in China, including advisories issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in this connection. The concerned Chinese authorities have assured all assistance to residents of Wuhan, including food supply.
The statement further added that the embassy is in touch with Chinese authorities in Beijing and Wuhan and Indians in Hubei Province.
It may be noted that over till now 17 people in China have died and over 600 are suspected to be infected with coronavirus which the health experts’ claim is due to the slaughtering of wild animals like wolves, snakes and civets in a wet market where even live animals like dogs and hares are sold.
The virus, originating in Wuhan at the end of last year, has spread to Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai, as well as the United States, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Coronavirus is a virus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). A person could catch the Coronavirus even by touching an infected patient.
