16 die several injured as passenger train collision in Pakistan
At least 16 persons died and 84 injured when a passenger train rammed into a stationary freight train in Rahim Yar Khan’s Walhar Railway Station in eastern Punjab province, Pakistan on Thursday morning.
The passenger, Akbar Bugti Express, was heading to Quetta from Lahore when it hit the freight train.
Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Jamil Ahmed informed that some of the injured were in a critical condition and that the death toll could rise. He also added that all the passengers aboard the train have been evacuated and sent to their destination in a special train and track clearance work is underway with the help of the army.
The area’s Divisional Personal Officer (DPO), Umar Salamat said the freight train was stationary on the loop line when the passenger which was on the mainline changed track and collided into it. Three to four compartments of the passenger derailed and the engine got badly mangled
Prime Minister Imran Khan too ordered Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad to take emergency steps to counter decades of neglect of railway infrastructure and provide best possible medical care to the victims.
