Wrestler Puniya bags 65 kg gold at Asian Championship; Rana settles for silver
Free style Indian wrestler Bajrang Puniya who charts the number 1 position in the world defeated Kazakhstan’s Sayatbek Okassov by 12-7 in the 65 kg men’s free style final at the Asian Championship on Tuesday in Xi’an, China.
Wrestlers Praveen Rana and Satyavrat Kadian too won silver and bronze in the 97 kg category, respectively. Rana lost to Bahman Mohammad Teymouri of Iran.
At the end Bajrang was trailing 2-5 against Okassov and with just 60 seconds more, Bajrang with down 2-7 but fought back and went on a spree of 10 straight points to win the match. Bajrang was a pre-tournament favourite considering his ranking and he stood big on his top billing and with his latest win has promised to be a strong medal contender at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He reached semifinals by defeating Peyman Biabani of Iran and Charles Fern of Sri Lanka.
