India takes on Ireland in a bid to secure their spot in the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2018 semifinals on Thursday. However, the victory came after a long wait of around 44 years.

The Indian men hockey team last secured the position on the podium at Kuala Lumpur in 1974, since then, Indian team has not reached those heights. But, Indian women hockey team grabbed the opportunity on Thursday and reached the final four of a Hockey World Cup.

Now, it will be interesting to see whether India can make up to finals or not.

Coach Sjoerd Marijne knows life from both sides of the fence, having been at the helm of the men’s team for a while, and understands how big a deal this run at the World Cup is for the girls. The team has worked really hard on defensive structures, coach said.

It was a dominant overall performance that saw them make the next round and in hindsight, team captain Rani believes the team has improved match-by-match where they have drawn 1-1 to World No.2 England, lost 0-1 to Ireland, drew 1-1 with USA in the Pool Stage followed by a triumphant 3-0 score-line against the Italians.
