Thai King weds his general days before coronation; Shocks all
In a surprising move, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn (66) married his general Suthida Tidjai making her the queen days before ascending the throne as Rama X. The wedding was solemnised in the palace at Bangkok on Saturday.
On Wednesday Thailand’s official television aired snippets from the wedding process in which King Vajiralongkorn was dressed in white uniform and Suthida in traditional pink silk dress lying on the floor as is the Thai tradition. Later, they were seen formally registering their marriage certificate book in the palace residence.
King’s Sister Princess Sirindhorn and Privy Council head Prem Tinsulanonda also signed in the witness column. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
King Vajiralongkorn, who took the throne after the death of his father King Bhumibol in 2016, will be coronated this weekend in Bangkok.
Reports say that Suthida, who was working as a flight attendant for Thai Airways International, joined the palace guard in 2013 and became commander of the king’s security unit. Presently, she holds general’s rank in addition to several top royal decorations.
King Vajiralongkorn has been married thrice and divorced his previous wife with whom he has a son. In all, he has twelve children.
