Suffocating Metro City: Mumbai, 4th most Polluted city in the world

It’s really devasting that financial capital of India is the 4th most polluted city in the world. Yes, Mumbai is ranked 4th for being the most polluted city in the world, up from 5th position last year. In a global air pollution database of WHO (World Health Organization) reflected that Mumbai’s air pollution has reached the alarming level and 9 out of 10 people are breathing highly polluted air. The study considered PM2.5 (particulate matter of diameter less than 2.5 micrometres) and PM10. PM2.5 is more dangerous than PM10. The study was conducted between 2010 to 2016.


Pollutant particles of 10 microns can easily enter the lungs causing serious health ailments. Mumbai recorded 104 µg/m3 (microgram per cubic metre) for the year 2016, which is 5 times higher than the safety limit of 20 µg/m3 and nearly 2 times higher than the Indian safety limit of 60 µg/m3.

While Delhi topped the list, it’s really saddening that two major cities, one is Capital and other is Finance capital of India, are living under highly polluted environment. Following the list, Cairo city of Egypt and Dhaka of Bangladesh ranked second and third at 284 µg/m3 and 147 µg/m3, respectively.
