Congress president Rahul Gandhi joined a protest over the dilution of the SC/ST Act 1989 at Jantar Mantar on Thursday and slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having an anti-Dalit mindset. CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury also joined Rahul at the Jantar Mantar to protest against the dilution of Atrocities Act.
Congress party posted a collage from the gathering to its official Twitter handle.
Addressing a gathering at the Jantar Mantar, the Congress chief said, ''PM Modi has no place for Dalits in his heart. If Modi ji had space for Dalits in his heart, then the policies for Dalits would have been different.''
The atrocities act was brought by the Congress and the party will protect it together with everybody," Gandhi said.
While addressing the gathering, calling the RSS and BJP parties as anti-Dalit, Rahul said Dalits are beaten up and crushed wherever there is a BJP government. "We don't want an India like this. We want an India in which there should be place for everybody, whether Dalits, poor, tribals or minorities... everybody should progress. We will fight for such an India," he said.
Interestingly, the Dalit outfits, which had given a call for Bharat Bandh (country-wide shutdown) on Thursday, postponed their agitation, in a major relief to the Centre.
