Punam Yadav, Commonwealth Games gold medalist, struck off from TOP scheme

poonam yadavBarely a week later when Punam Yadav had hit a new record by bagging gold in 69kg Commonwealth Games weightlifting in April, she got embroiled in a land dispute between her relatives and their neighbours at her village in Varanasi.

According to the reports, a 22-year old boy was injured in the clash, dealing a low in the lifter’s career that had promised to take off at the stage.

Despite making the country proud by bagging a gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2018 held in Gold Coast, Australia, Punam has been dropped from the Union Sports Ministry’s Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme.

This comes after Punam was warned by Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to perform disciplinary action, in which Punam reportedly failed to attend federation’s camp and not going through the dope test on her return from the CWG 2018.

Due to not performing discipline, Punam has been excluded from the selected core group for the Jakarta Asian Games to be held from August 18 to September 2.
