Life of a Legendary Actress Sridevi: Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan

A lady with pure heart and soul has left the world forever. Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan (Sridevi for us) was born on 13th August 1963 in Sivakasi, Madras (now, Tamil Nadu). From her childhood only, she was passionate towards acting and dancing; she started her acting career from a very young age of just 4 years. She made her debut as a child artist from Kandan Karunai in 1967 in Tamil language and in 1969 she geared up her acting career with M.A Thirumugam’s devotional film, Thunaivan. Sridevi, a legendary actress had worked in multiple language films like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. Sridevi made her Bollywood debut as a child artist from Rani Mera Naam in 1972. Chose acting over education Starting an acting career at a very young age of just 4 years gave a lot of challenges to the actress. She has to travel for several outdoor shoots. Initially, Sridevi’s parents supported her for making a balance between acting and education, but, things for not going in the flow and a time came when she has to choose one from two, either acting or education; she chose acting. She never turned back to regret her decision.

Sridevi's Bollywood career

Sridevi started her film career as a lead actress in Bollywood cinema from film Solva Sawan in 1979 and achieved a wide popularity with film Himmatwala, released in 1983. She became a style icon for her dress, makeup, and jewelry worn in a song “Naino me sapna” and then the trend was followed by other Bollywood actresses like Rekha, Shilpa Shetty, and more. She made a flagship in Bollywood films with a series of massively successful movies, namely, Mawaali (1983), Mr. India (1987), Tohfa (1984), Waqt Ki Awaaz (1988), Naya Kadam (1984), Masterji (1985), Nazrana (1987), and Chandni (1984). She was praised for her marvelous acting in Chalbaaz (1989), Nagina (1986), Ladla (1994), Sadma (1983), Lamhe (1991), Gumrah (1993), Khuda Gawah (1992), and Judai (1997). Sridevi made a successful pair with Anil Kapoor, Jitendra, Amitabh Bacchan, Kamal Hasan, and Rajnikanth. She was among the highest paid actresses of 80s and 90s. Sridevi made a comeback in bollywood in 2012 with comedy-drama English-Vinglish. Even after staying away from acting for about 15 years, she proved that nothing can come in-between her passion for acting. English Vinglish was a huge hit with a box office collection of around 80 crores. In 2017, she again proved a gem of her acting in the thriller “Mom”; critics appraised her for her acting and performance. Sridevi acted in around 300 films in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi languages. Sridevi was the only first Bollywood actress to receive an offer to work in Hollywood movie. Steven Spielberg offered her a role in Jurassic Park, but, she refused the offer. This was the time when she was at the peak of her Bollywood career.

Sridevi's Personal Life

Like her career, everyone was talking about her personal life too when she was at the peak of her acting career. Personal life of this legendary actress was like a roller costal; so many controversies and home breaker tag made the situations difficult for her. But, nothing can hold her back if once she decided to move on and the same happened to her love life as well. In 1984, Boney Kapoor was producing a film, Mr. India, for which he offered a role of Seema to Sridevi. In first meeting only, Boney fell for her beauty and elegance. At that time, Sridevi’s career decisions were taken by her mother, Rajeshwari Ayyapan. Boney offered Rs.11 Lakhs to her for Mr. India. Boney Kapoor was already married to Mona and two children with her, Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor. After meeting with Sridevi, Boney was deeply in love with her and he decided to start a new life with this elegant beauty. Soon, the news of pre-marriage pregnancy of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s child spread like a fire and in 1996, the couple decided to tie a marital knot and had a simple temple wedding. Sridevi was given a tag of house-breaker by Boney’s previous wife. Even today, Boney’s child with his first wife, Mona, Arjun and Anshula has bitter relations with Sridevi. Despite so many ups and downs, the couple had made their beautiful love story successfully. Later, on 20th November 2000, Sridevi gave birth to Boney’s second child, Khushi. And the couple made a happy family thereafter completing 21 years of marriage in June 2017.
