BJP’s Lekhi files criminal contempt case against Rahul Gandhi for misquoting Top Court
BJP lawmaker Meenakshi Lekhi has appealed the Apex Court for criminal contempt acting against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his statement welcoming the top court in the Rafale case in the beginning of this week.
The BJP spokesperson has accused Rahul Gandhi of contempt of court and added that he attributed the “Chowkidaar Chor Hai” statement to the Supreme Court as saying in its order and tried to create prejudice.
Also, the attorney general Mukul Rohatgi who represented Lekhi said that the Congress president has deliberately misinterpreted the recent judgment of the Top Court dismissing certain preliminary objections raised by the government. He said, “Mr. Gandhi purposefully gave a coloured interpretation to the judgment in order to personally attack Mr. Modi.
Soon after Rahul Gandhi’s statement, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hit back accusing him of contempt of court, saying he had misquoted the top court. Ms Sitharaman said the court order was limited to whether it should consider the documents the government said were illegally obtained by petitioners. "Rahul Gandhi has completely showed his frustration by saying what the court had not said," Ms Sitharaman said.
”On Wednesday, the Bench dismissed government’s plea to keep the Rafale Jets’ deal documents a secret and supported freedom of press in a democracy.
Chief Justice Gogoi will hear the contempt petition on Monday.
