Indian U-16 and U-20 team stuns Iraq and Argentina in Football

Indian U-16 and U-20 football teams had a memorable match on the same day. Indian U-16 team stunned reigning Asian Champions Iraq for the first time, while India U-20 team bagged the cup against Argentina by 2-1.

U-20 Indian football team were playing in the tournament for the first time, and unexpectedly punched experienced team like Argentina, Venezuela and Mauritania. This was unfamiliar territory for India, and having taken over from Portuguese coach Luis Norton de Matos just 10 days earlier, even Floyd was not sure of the win.

Deepak Tangri and Anwar Ali came out as stars for the Indian team on Monday as the coach side scripted a historic result against 6 times U-20 world champions.

U-20 team India played with 10 players for 40 minutes and had an unbelievable win over Argentina by 2-1 in the final group stage match of the Cotif Cup, a biennial invitational tournament for international youth teams.

On the other hand, U-16 team India stunned reigning Asian Champions Iraq for the first time in history. Courtesy to Bhuvenesh’s last minute goal that turned its campaign back on track at the West Asian Football Federation Tournament. This is the first-ever victory for any Indian football team against Iraq in any format and among all age groups.

“This victory will definitely earn Indian Football more respect in the world of football. It opens up a window of opportunity to test ourselves against the best in the World on a regular basis,” Pinto said after the match.

“It’s unbelievable! I am a very proud Indian today. This win is a testament to the efforts and belief of the All India Football Federation in moving forward towards developing the youth of the country”, he added.
