Hima Das bags gold medal in World U-20 Athletics Championship

A 18-year-old Hima Das scripts history by winning gold in 400m final at IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland and becomes first Indian woman to win gold medal in the track event of the World Championships.

To claim the first position, Das finished 400m track in just 51.46 seconds. Andrea Miklos of Romania came second after clocking 52.07 seconds to maintain silver and Taylor Manson, USA came third with a timing of 52.28 seconds and took home bronze.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Hima and twitted, “India is delighted and proud of athlete Hima Das, who won a historic Gold in the 400m of World U-20 Championships… This accomplishment will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years.”

Rajyavardhan Rathore, Minister of State Youth Affairs & Sports also praised Hima.


She made under-20 record of India by finishing in sixth position in 51.32 seconds in the Commonwealth Games 400 metre finals in Gold Coast held in April this year. After that she worked on improving her timings and bagged a gold medal by finishing in 51.13 seconds at National Inter State Championship in 400 metre held in Guwahati.

Now she joins the company of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who also bagged gold in Poland in the last edition, 2016 in a world record effort.
