CJI Gogoi accused of sexual advances by junior core team member
The bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjiv Khanna on Saturday held a special hearing on Sexual harassment allegations against CJI after a special mention was made by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. This was after a former female employee of the Supreme Court, and a core team member of the CJI, sent to all 22 judges an affidavit on April 19, alleging sexual harassment charges against CJI. The alleged incident of harassment happened on October 11, 2018.
Along with the affidavit, she has attached video recordings of several incidents she refers to in the document including the one in which Delhi Police Official who accompanied her to CJI’s residence where his wife asked her to apologise. It clearly said that Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik were informed about the same on January 11.
The woman has since been dismissed from service and seen her whole life fall apart.
The woman states that she was molested on two different occasions in October 2018 by the CJI only days after he was appointed to the post.
She stated that she and her family were being harassed after she resisted his advances. During the special hearing, Gogoi strongly denied the allegations and said they were part of "a larger conspiracy" and that a "bigger force" is behind the woman who levelled the charges.
He stated, "Independence of judiciary is under very, very severe threat. There has to be bigger force behind this, they want to deactivate office of CJI. This is unbelievable. I don't think I should stoop low even to deny these allegations."
The bench has not passed any judicial order at this moment and has asked media to show restraint, responsibility and wisdom so that independence of judiciary is not affected by baseless allegations, Supreme Court.
