Bus falls into gauge in Uttarakhand, 14 dead and 16 injured

At least 14 people died and around 16 others injured after a Tranportation Corporation bus fell into a 250meter deep gorge near Chamba town in Tehri district of Uttarakhand on Thursday morning.

The accident occurred near Kirgani around 90 kilometers away from Dehradun on Rishikesh-Chamba-Gangotri highway around 8 am when the bus was transporting around 25 passengers from Uttarkashi to Haridwar, Tehri District Magistrate Sonika said.

Six of the injured were airlifted to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science) in Rishikesh for treatment and the rest were being treated at Tehri District hospital and Masiha hospital in Chamba.

The District Magistrate said, “Police and SDRF teams were conducting rescue operation”.

Amit Singh Negi, Secretary (Disaster) said, “Rescue machinery was immediately put into action at the district as well as the state levels. The helicopter is in the process of airlifting victims. District magistrate Sonika is at the accident site, monitoring the rescue and relief work”.

Chife Minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat expressed sorrow at the loss of lives in the accident and the Government also announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the decease’s family and Rs. 50,000 each to the injured.

Earlier on July 1, the same incident took place when a 28-seater overloaded bus fell into a gorge near Queen Village in Pauri district of Uttarakhand. 48 people were dead and 12 were injured in the accident.
