Majerhat Bridge in Alipore area of Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday evening crushing one to dead and 21 injured. This is the third such incident in last 6 years. State government announced to provide Rs.5 lakh compensation to the deceased’s family, while Rs.50,000 for injured. Officials said, two injured victims are in critical condition. There is no possibility of more people being trapped under the bridge debris as victims have been rescued successfully, said rescue officials.
The eye witnesses said it was around 4:45 pm, they were working nearby and suddenly heard a sound. They saw cars, bikes, and a mini bus crushed with the bridge collapse. Luckily, it collapsed on the canal, if it had collapsed on the railway track, a major disaster could have happened. "We are very worried. We are receiving information from the rescue team on ground. We want to go back as soon as possible. There are no flights in the evening, we are unable to do so," said Mamata Banerjee."Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later," the chief minister added. The bridge is said to be over 50 years old on the arterial Diamond Harbour Road in Alipore area, one of the busiest vicinity that connects city centre to the heavily crowded Behala area. The road bridge runs over the Majherhat Railway Station on the Sealdah-Budge Budge line during the evening rush hour.
