The Defence Ministry on Saturday confirmed that the AERO India 2019 show will be held in Bengaluru from February 20 to 24. Bengaluru retained the rights to organize the aerospace and defence exhibition. AERO India is said to be Asia’s biggest aerospace exhibition and will be held in its traditional venue. The confirmation comes weeks after a lot of speculations and controversy doing rounds that the prestigious air show hosted by Bengaluru for over two decades might be shifted out to another city.
The controversies kicked off a storm last month when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath requested defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman to let them host the country’s largest air show in Lucknow. Days later Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, insisting that Bengaluru would be the "best choice" for the event. The defence ministry said in a statement, "This five-day event will combine a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with public air shows. Besides global leaders and big investors in aerospace industry, the show will also see participation by think-tanks from across the world.” The Defence Ministry also received requests from others states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha and Tamil Nadu to host the next Aero India. Bengaluru has been hosting the show since its inception in 1996.
