In a case similar to that of Muzaffarpur shelter home of Bihar, 24 girls have been rescued from an unlicensed shelter home in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh amid allegations of sexual and physical abuse. The matter came to light when a 10-year old girl escaped from the shelter and told the UP police that “red, white, black cars picked girls at night and dropped them in the morning”.

Girija Tripathi, her husband Mohan Tripathi and their daughter were arrested after police rescued 24 inmates and found 15 others missing Sunday night. The shelter home, which was funded by the UP government till three years ago, was searched after a 10-year-old girl, who belonged to Bihar’s Betia, escaped by scaling the boundary wall on Sunday night.

According to news agency ANI, 15 girls are still missing and the shelter home has been sealed. A married couple is arrested for running sex racket.

“The victims will be sent for a medical examination for sexual harassment and produced before the chief judicial magistrate to record their statement under section 164. Law will take its course of action,” said Anand Kumar, Additional Director General (Law and Order) of UP Police.

“When the order to close this institution was made, our people went there and the organisation’s director misbehaved with our team. Today, after a girl escaped from there, we got to the reality of that place. There have been many big disclosures during the investigation. 24 children have been rescued safely so far,” said Rohan P Kanay, Superintendent of Police.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is already probing charges that Girija operated the shelter home called Maa Vindyavasini Mahila evam Balika Sanrakshan Grih even after the UP government scrapped its licence in June 2017.

After the Muzaffarpur incident, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had ordered district officials across the state to inspect shelter homes and take action in case of any negligence or discrepancies.
