19th Kargil Diwas: Real Life Heroes and their extra ordinary sacrifices

kargil warWhile the entire nation was sleeping in peace, real super heroes were sacrificing their life. Their courage and passion towards the nation is larger than life itself. Every year, many soldiers sacrifice their life for the sake of nation’s safety and Kargil War (1999) is no different.

The Kargil war was fought between India and Pakistan in 1999 in Kargil, Ladakh, which earlier was Baltistan district separated by the LOC after the first Kashmir War. India launched ‘Operation Vijay’ to clear the Kargil sector of infiltration by Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants on the Indian side of the Line of Control. On July 26, 1999, India had a victory over Pakistan, though the country lost more than 500 soldiers.

On this Kargil vijay diwas, here are some extra-ordinary stories of our soldier’s sacrifices:

Captain Vikram Batra

Born in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, Captain Vikram Batra of 13 J&K Rifles is a superhero of the Kargil war. Vikram was severely injured and still managed to kill 3 enemy soldiers at peak 5140 at an altitude of 17000 feet. He was killed while clearing enemy positions. Batra’s last words were “Jai Mata Di.”

Naib Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav

Coming from Uttar Pradesh, Yogendra Singh Yadav showed courage to capture three bunkers on Tiger Hill by leading the pack right to the top of cliff at 16500 feet height. He was honoured with Param Vir Chakra for his courageous move.

Major Padmapani Acharya

Major Padmapani Acharya captured bunker at Tololing Top. After consistent gruelling battle so after consistent grueling battle, he captured the enemy post and breathed his last only after completing his mission.

Captain Anuj Nayyar

At a young age of 24, Capt. Anuj captured point 4875, known as Pimple 2. This real hero killed 9 enemy soldiers and destroyed 3 enemy bunkers. He breathed his last while destroying the fourth bunker for his platoon.

We can never get back the soldiers, but, they all will always be alive in the heart of our nation. We salute to their courage and sacrifices for the sake of nation. JAI HIND!
